Hathor—Solar Goddess of Healing

Hathor is considered a Solar Goddess, and as Sekhmet is “The Eye of Ra”.  She is considered the equivalent of Aphrodite of Greece and Venus of Rome.  Her temples were filled with precious jewels and oils on her days of worship.  But to me she is much more than a Goddess of Love and Sensuality.  To aspire to her radiant path, she serves a function of healer of the emotional body.  She is one who requires that we surrender our burdens in order to participate in her ecstatic state of joy and exuberance of life.  She is said to represent rebirth; in my opinion she is particularly a goddess of emotional and psychological rebirth.

During my initiation experience as a Priestess of Isis, Hathor came to me to take me through deeper levels of healing.  She made it clear that I would not be able to access the light and joy that she is known to bestow unless I was willing to continue to commit myself to an ongoing process of emotional healing and unburdening all energies, consciousness and behaviors that literally serve as a block to her radiance, love and joy.  With sistrum and wand pointed downward over my crown she commenced an intense healing and purification as part of my preparation and initiation into her priesthood.

I believe her priestesses served a shamanic function through music inducing altered states of trancework and channeling the essence of this Great Goddess.  The sistrum, the menat necklace accorded use by her priestesses specifically, along with dance and music, I believe, were not purely for the purposes of entertainment as some scholars have misunderstood through misinterpretation of art and hieroglyphs.  These were wielded by powerful priestesses of psychological healing and facilitators of spiritual wholeness.  Hathor and her priestesses demonstrate the state of ecstasy achieved through transformation and transmutation that this healing solar Goddess is capable of disseminating in all her radiant glory.
